Elevating the National Scouting Combine: From Basic Flash to Cinematic Speed
We photographed 123 athletes for the National Scouting Combine with zero delays. Discover how cinematic lighting and automated data integration allowed us to deliver fully retouched, organized galleries just two hours after the final shutter click.
The Client
The National Scouting Combine (NSC) is a premier showcase where elite athletes demonstrate their skills for professional scouts. In an environment where "brand" is everything, the NSC needed imagery that reflected the professional caliber of the talent on the field.
The Challenge: Moving Beyond "Good Enough"
In previous years, the NSC relied on basic on-camera flash photography. While functional, the results lacked the professional "pop" of a pro-sports portrait. Furthermore, the manual process of identifying, naming, and distributing 100+ files created a massive administrative bottleneck for the media team.
The Goal: Deliver 123 high-end, retouched, and perfectly organized headshots before the athletes even finished their first night of check-ins.
The Solution: A High-Tech, High-Touch Workflow
To meet the deadline without sacrificing quality, we implemented a synchronized "Capture-to-Cloud" workflow.
1. Cinematic Sports Lighting
We moved away from flat flash photography and designed a custom three-point lighting setup:
Main Light: Keyed for dramatic, high-contrast texture to emphasize determination.
Rim/Strip Light: Placed off the opposite shoulder to create separation from the background and highlight the athletes’ physique.
Background Light: Dedicated lighting for the NSC logo backdrop to ensure brand consistency and clarity.
2. Automated Data Integration
Using Headshot Tools, we pre-loaded the NSC’s athlete roster via CSV. As athletes checked in between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM, they simply gave their name to our assistant. With one click, the athlete's data was synced, and the file naming was automated in real-time.
3. Real-Time Post-Production
By tethering directly into Capture One Pro, we applied a custom-built style (color grade and contrast) to every image as it hit the sensor. Utilizing Capture One’s AI Face Retouch panel, we were able to provide a polished, "magazine-ready" look instantly—eliminating the need for weeks of post-event editing.
The Results: 123 Athletes, 0 Delays
The efficiency of the setup allowed us to capture each athlete in both their workout gear and their official jerseys with zero friction.
Turnaround Time: The entire gallery of 123 athletes was delivered just 2 hours after the final shutter click.
Zero-Admin Delivery: Every file was automatically named by athlete name, allowing the NSC media manager to instantly find and deploy assets to social media and scout portals.
Elevated Brand: The transition from on-camera flash to "pro-spec" cross-lighting significantly raised the visual production value of the entire event.
"Kevin Boller was fantastic to work with at the National Scouting Combine. He brought energy, creativity, and professionalism to every shoot, and the headshots came out absolutely incredible. Kevin captured over 100 draft-eligible athletes along with our staff, and the consistency and quality of his work really stood out. We couldn’t have asked for a better photography partner."
