Evening workshop · Downtown Fort Myers

Street & DocumentaryPhotography Workshop

One evening. Downtown Fort Myers. One image that makes you feel something.

Street photography is the most honest form of the art. No hired model. No studio lights. No second chances. Just you, a camera, and the city — and the question of whether you can see what's actually there before it disappears.

What this workshop is

This is a 3.5-hour evening workshop held at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in the heart of downtown Fort Myers. It's designed for anyone who has ever felt the impulse to raise their camera at something happening right in front of them — and then hesitated.

We start inside SBDAC with a talk that covers the giants of the genre (Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Helen Levitt), the visual skills that create compelling street images, and one of the most important conversations in photography: the difference between what's legal and what's ethical when you point a camera at a stranger. Then we step out the front door.

For 90 minutes you'll walk a curated route through downtown Fort Myers during golden hour, and I'll be right there with you — not lecturing, just coaching in the moment. We close back at SBDAC by looking at what we made together.

A note from Kevin

I'll be honest with you upfront: I'm a commercial photographer. Product photography. Controlled environments, planned shoots, clients who hired me. I don't do street photography myself — and one of the reasons is this: I always ask whether I'd want someone pointing a camera at me without asking. The answer is no.

I think that discomfort is exactly the right place to start. Because anyone who picks up a camera on the street and feels zero hesitation probably isn't thinking hard enough about what they're doing. The fact that you came here means you already take it seriously. That matters. And tonight, we're going to work with that.

Who this is for
  • All skill levels. You can shoot on a dedicated camera or your phone — phones are legitimate creative tools used by professional photographers every single day, and on the street, they're invisible. That's an advantage, not a limitation.
  • No prior experience with street photography is required. Curiosity is.
What you'll walk away with
  • A practical framework for composition, light awareness, and in-the-moment decision-making.
  • A clear understanding of your legal rights and your ethical responsibilities as a photographer in public spaces.
  • Confidence that your first hesitation was the right one — and that you pushed through it anyway.
  • If the evening goes the way it usually does, at least one image you didn't expect to make.
